SWIM COMMITTEE REPORT FOR 2006

The Meadows swimming pool provided many hours of fun and enjoyment for the members this summer.  The refinishing of the pool deck was completed just in time for the opening and with a newly repaired and repainted picnic shade structure and a great new shade canopy over the playground area, the members were able to remain cool and comfortable on those hot summer days.

Swim Lessons:

The swimming lessons for the younger children were well attended and successful and we would like to thank our excellent group of instructors for their efforts. A lifesaving certification class was also offered and approximately 12 of the club’s teenagers attended this.  The coached workout for adults on Sunday mornings was tried again this summer but after the first month it was discontinued due to a lack of solid participation.

Swim Team:

The Meadows Swim Team continues to be a very popular activity at the club.  Sporting new swimsuits this year, there were 146 swimmers who participated on the official swim team, which is up 8 swimmers from 2005 and up 28 swimmers from 2004.  There were 18 swimmers on the pre-team, which was larger than usual, and 2 of these swimmers moved up to the main team.  Shane Mood returned as head coach, with a crew of two returning age group coaches, Jill and Hannah, and three new age group coaches, Kelly, Jessica and Jen.  The team won 5 of their 6 dual meets.  There were 18 Meadows Club records broken, including 15 individual records and 3 relay records.  At the league finals, the team finished in third place for the third year in a row out of thirteen teams, six of those being larger teams. There were several outstanding high point performances by Meadows swimmers and Kristen Boysen was honored with the BVSSL Co-Senior Swimmer of the Year Award.

The swim team had an unusually high number of swimmers in the older age groups this year which necessitated some practice time changes from years past.  The 15-18’s were so large, 38 swimmers, that they required their own practice time.

The club hosted two extra meets this summer.  The Mesa Swim Team was without their pool due to renovation so they held their “home” meet at the Meadows.  With a similar problem, the Lafayette Swim Team was unable to hold the 8 and under Prelims. at their pool, so the Meadows hosted it instead.  These large events required some very creative parking management.  It was discovered that the club can accommodate many more cars than anyone would have realized by utilizing the back areas around the platform tennis court.  The Bake Sale and Grill also realized off the chart, record profits of $4,700 from the added events.  A well deserved thanks goes to the tireless efforts of our bake sale and grill workers who put in lots of extra duty this summer.

The swim committee and the Board as a whole would like to formally thank Shane Mood and his excellent team of coaches for providing a great year for the children.  We would also like to thank Dale Mood for his continued excellence in running the home meets, and the prelims and final meets, along with the dedicated scorekeepers, ribbon writers, clerks of course, timers, runners, and stroke judges.  A special thank you also goes to the many parents who helped with the new preseason potluck dinner, the spaghetti dinner, providing name tags, taking pictures, driving to the various social activities and for preparing the year end banquet and wonderful slide show.  Without everyone’s help, the swim team could not continue to be the success that it is each year.

We look forward to another great swim season next summer.
